ROHM Begins Mass Production of Wide-SOA MOSFET for Automotive Safety Circuits
Kyoto-based ROHM has launched volume production of a 100V MOSFET with industry-leading safe operating area tolerance, targeting airbag and seatbelt drive circuits.
KYOTO — ROHM Corporation began mass production in June of a 100V automotive MOSFET that delivers five times the safe operating area (SOA) tolerance of comparable devices, addressing high-power pulse loads in safety-critical circuits.
The chip, packaged in the industry-standard 5060 footprint, suppresses secondary breakdown across a wide voltage range — critical for airbag inflator ignition, seatbelt pretensioner drives, and battery cutoff pyro-fuse circuits where instantaneous high current spikes occur. Sample pricing is ¥450 (about $3) per unit, and the part is AEC-Q101 qualified. ROHM is developing two larger variants — an HPLF8080 (8.0 × 8.0 mm) and a TOLG leaded package (9.9 × 11.7 mm) — to extend the Wide-SOA lineup.
