Osaka Launches ¥3M Subsidy Targeting Factory-floor AI Deployment

The Osaka Business Development Agency has opened grants for SMEs implementing AI-plus-IoT systems in manufacturing, construction, and retail operations, addressing slow physical-site adoption.

OSAKA — The Osaka Business Development Agency ahs opened applications on May 18, 2026 for grants of up to ¥3 million (roughly $20,000) to fund AI implementation in factory floors, construction sites, and retail operations, addressing a deployment gap in Japan’s industrial heartland.

The program, administered through Soft Industry Plaza TEQS, targets physical-site applications that combine AI with IoT sensors, robotics, or big-data analytics—such as automated visual inspection systems in manufacturing. Eligible projects must include both hardware installation and control software, with subsidies covering 50% of equipment purchase or lease costs, installation fees, and service subscriptions. The Osaka Business Development Agency expects to fund approximately three projects.

Applicants must meet the following criteria

• Be an SME with an Osaka City business address actively conducting operations
• Deploy systems integrating AI with complementary technologies (IoT, robotics, or big-data tools)
• Complete installation and testing within the subsidy period
• Not receive overlapping grants from other public agencies

Application windows run May 18–June 30 (round one) and July 1–31 (round two), closing early if funds are exhausted.

Why it matters: While half of Japanese firms now have generative-AI policies in place—mostly for office tasks like document drafting—adoption lags in physical operations, according to Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications data cited in the release.
