OptQC and NTT Formalize Alliance to Build Million-qubit Optical Quantum Computer by 2030
Tokyo-based OptQC and NTT sign capital and business partnership targeting fault-tolerant, million-qubit optical quantum computer by fiscal 2030, with joint research running through fiscal 2027.
TOKYO — OptQC and NTT Corporation signed a capital and business alliance on August 3 to develop a fault-tolerant, million-qubit optical quantum computer by fiscal 2030, formalizing a collaboration announced in November 2025. NTT will invest an undisclosed sum in OptQC, based in Tokyo’s Toshima ward.
The companies have also begun joint research through fiscal 2027 to design system architecture and core components for the target machine. NTT has established a quantum research hub at its Atsugi R&D Center in Kanagawa; OptQC is operating its first machine, MoQuren, at AIST’s G-QuAT facility. In March, the joint research team reported the world’s highest-quality quantum light source using waveguide optical devices.
Roadmap
- FY2026: Begin co-creation with user companies and research institutions
- FY2027: Design complete for million-qubit system; start supply-chain development
- FY2028: Launch proof-of-concept with a 10,000-qubit machine
- FY2030: Deploy million-qubit fault-tolerant system
Optical quantum computing is more scalable and energy-efficient than competing approaches, leveraging optical communication technology already commercialized in telecom. The partnership pairs OptQC’s 25 years of university research heritage with NTT’s optical amplification and wavelength-multiplexing expertise. Target applications span finance (risk analysis), manufacturing (logistics optimization), drug discovery, materials science, and energy management.
