Kawasaki Heavy and Kubota Join NVIDIA Cosmos Coalition as Japan Robotics Leaders Align on Open Physical AI

Over 20 Japanese manufacturers and tech firms, including Kobe-based Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Osaka-based Kubota, commit to NVIDIA's Cosmos platform for physical AI development. Fujitsu leads a separate feasibility study with Fanuc, Yaskawa, and Kawasaki on a collaborative control platform.

TOKYO — More than 20 Japanese robotics and manufacturing firms, including Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Kubota, announced intent to join NVIDIA’s Cosmos Coalition, committing to build open physical AI models on a shared platform for factory automation, logistics, agriculture, and construction.

NVIDIA also unveiled Cosmos 3 Edge, a 4-billion-parameter model designed to run vision reasoning and robot policy on edge devices like NVIDIA Jetson. Separately, Fujitsu disclosed it is leading a feasibility study with Fanuc, Yaskawa Electric, and Kawasaki Heavy Industries to develop a collaborative control platform using NVIDIA Cosmos, Omniverse, and Isaac libraries. The platform is intended to bridge digital and physical operations across industries.

Coalition members include Fanuc, Hitachi, NEC, SoftBank, Sony Group, Preferred Networks, Mujin, TRON, Enactic, GROOVE X, Telexistence, and Omron. Kawasaki Heavy Industries, headquartered in Kobe, is deploying NVIDIA’s physical AI stack across healthcare robotics, shipbuilding, transport, aerospace, and energy sectors. Kubota, based in Osaka, is testing Cosmos for autonomous agriculture and smart farming applications.

“Japan created modern manufacturing. Now is the chance to rebuild it for the era of intelligent industry,” said NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang in a statement.

Why it matters: Japan’s fragmented industrial robotics ecosystem rarely aligns on shared software standards. The Cosmos Coalition signals a potential convergence on a single open framework for physical AI — a shift foreign investors and OEMs should monitor as deployment pilots expand across factories, farms, and construction sites this year.
