Kyocera Wins Tokyo Grant for Lightweight Solar System Aimed at Low-load Roofs
Kyocera was selected for Tokyo Metropolitan Government grant support to develop detachable solar systems for low-load-bearing roofs, with demonstration planned around 2027.
KYOTO — Kyocera Corporation won grant support from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the Tokyo Metropolitan Environmental Public Corporation to develop a detachable lightweight solar panel system for factory and warehouse roofs unable to carry conventional glass-panel installations, with demonstration scheduled around 2027.
The three-year project, running April 2026 through March 2029, addresses buildings where low load-bearing capacity blocks traditional solar installations. Kyocera’s system uses silicon cells in a glass-free structure, balancing power generation efficiency with reliability. The company is testing the system on a slate roof at a Denso facility. Grant amount was not disclosed.
Kyocera will apply its SoRelia lifespan prediction technology, built through years of solar R&D, to enable panel reuse and recycling and cut waste.
Why it matters: Low-weight roofs on factories and warehouses represent large untapped surface area for renewable energy expansion in Japan, where suitable land for ground-mounted solar is shrinking. Demonstration is expected in Tokyo in 2027.
