Funds Startups Opens Kansai Office to Build Venture Debt Network for Deeptech
Tokyo-based venture debt specialist Funds Startups launched a Kansai office on July 1 to expand financing options for research-heavy startups through regional bank partnerships and university collaboration.
OSAKA — Funds Startups, a Tokyo investment bank specializing in startup financing, established a Kansai office on July 1 to build out venture debt infrastructure for the region’s deeptech companies through partnerships with local financial institutions and universities.
The office will focus on three areas: coordinating co-investment arrangements with Kansai banks to broaden the pool of venture debt providers; working with universities to identify and support promising research-based startups; and developing a regional venture debt ecosystem to give capital-intensive companies more financing options beyond equity rounds.
Executive Director Atsuhiko Takahashi, who joined the firm in May, will lead the Kansai operation. His background includes venture debt fund formation at Aozora Corporate Investment (2021–2024) and a COO role at an early-stage startup (2024–2026). Funds Startups cited growing demand from research-heavy startups in Osaka and Kansai for capital structures that match their longer development timelines and higher cash needs.
Why it matters: A locally embedded venture debt specialist changes the financing landscape for Kansai deeptech spinouts and growth-stage companies, offering an alternative to dilutive equity rounds and potentially accelerating commercialization timelines for university-originated technologies.
