OSAKA — CIC Japan, Nippon Life Insurance, Osaka Prefecture, and the Future Medicine Promotion Organization signed a four-party memorandum of understanding July 3 to build a life sciences startup ecosystem around O-Nexus, CIC’s newly opened innovation campus inside Nakanoshima Qross in Osaka’s Nakanoshima district.

The signing took place at WHX Osaka 2026, the World Health Expo held at Intex Osaka. O-Nexus opened in May as a joint project between CIC Japan and Nippon Life, offering lab space, incubation services, and connections to CIC’s global network for health tech startups. Nakanoshima Qross itself, which opened in 2024, houses the only approved iPS cell cardiac treatment facility in the world and serves as Osaka’s flagship regenerative medicine complex.

Governor Hirofumi Yoshimura said the MOU will “inherit the legacy of the Osaka-Kansai Expo and advance the industrialization of future medicine to contribute to prosperous lives and health for people in Japan and around the world.” CIC Japan CEO Denise Medrano positioned O-Nexus as a “gateway to the world” for Kansai life sciences firms. Nippon Life president Satoshi Asahi emphasized the insurer’s intent to provide a “multifaceted security” model spanning healthcare, nursing care, and childcare through industry-academia-government partnerships.

Why it matters: The agreement formalizes institutional support from Osaka’s largest insurer and the prefectural government for CIC’s first life sciences-focused facility in Asia, linking Cambridge Innovation Center’s network to Japan’s leading regenerative medicine research base.
