Tokyo VC Archetype Ventures Wins NEDO Contract to Match Entrepreneurs with University Technology Nationwide
Archetype Ventures selected for NEDO's Management Personnel Matching program running August 2026 to March 2028, enabling aspiring founders to actively search for deep-tech university IP across Japan.
TOKYO — Archetype Ventures, a Tokyo-based venture capital firm, has been selected to run NEDO’s Management Personnel Matching (MPM) program from August 2026 through March 2028, flipping the traditional university-spinout model by letting aspiring entrepreneurs search for research IP rather than waiting for technology to find a founder.
The program addresses a long-standing bottleneck: Japan’s universities hold world-class research, but lack management talent to commercialize it. NEDO’s MPM initiative funds venture firms to recruit entrepreneur-in-residence (EIR) candidates, train them, and broker deals between those individuals and university technology. Archetype’s approach, which it calls “exploration-led EIR,” reverses the usual process: rather than matching a pre-selected technology to a manager, it lets candidates pursue their own interests across institutions nationwide, not limited to the Tokyo metro area.
- EIRs receive activity stipends and optional paid VC internships (hourly wage) to learn deal-sourcing and investment evaluation.
- Archetype assigns monthly check-ins and an “ignition team” of IP, strategy, and startup specialists.
- Universities and national research institutes may submit technology leads; no geographic restriction applies.
Applications are open now via Archetype’s website for both management candidates (including part-time participation) and researchers with commercializable IP.
Deep-tech spinouts often stall when no qualified executive steps forward. By recruiting founders first and giving them tools to hunt for viable projects, the program tests whether demand-side matching can unlock regional research assets faster than the status quo. The 20-month timeframe runs until March 2028.
